《光年之外》是電影《太空旅客》中國區主題曲。《太空旅客》片方考慮到鄧紫棋的個人影響力及其敢愛敢恨的愛情觀與電影內核相符合，特地邀請她為電影創作并演唱主題曲。鄧紫棋在看過電影數個片段后，靈思泉涌，創作出多個版本的歌曲備選，最終創作出了該曲，她希望借該曲說出所有人的心聲。
