The ordinary world is a million word novel written by Lu Yao, a Chinese writer. This novel is a panoramic expression of contemporary Chinese urban and rural social life of the novel, a total of three books. It was first published in December 1986.

With the background of China from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, through complicated contradictions and entanglements, and centering on the two brothers Sun Shao'an and Sun Shaoping, the book depicts the images of many ordinary people from all walks of life at that time; labor and love, frustration and pursuit, pain and joy, daily life and enormous social conflicts intersect with each other. Weaving together, it profoundly demonstrates the arduous and tortuous road that ordinary people have gone through in the historical process of the great age.

In March 1991, the"ordinary world" won the third Mao Dun prize in literature in China.

E. M. Forster，是一個同性戀，也是一個文學天才。

愛德華·摩根·福斯特一生共寫了6部長篇小說，無獨有偶，他的作品主線都是建立在巨大的階級鴻溝之上，可以簡括為：貴族配貧民，主人公力排眾議，沖破世俗的枷鎖，去追求內心的真實與美好。

1905年《Where Angels Fear to Tread》（天使不敢駐足的地方），描寫的是一位英國貴婦與一位意大利平民結合的故事；

1907年《The Longest Journey》（最漫長的旅程），描寫的是一位世家子弟與一位出身卑微的鄉村青年結下深厚的友誼的故事。

1908年《A Room with A View》（看得見風景的房間），描寫的是一位英國貴族少女在意大利與一位年輕男子邂逅相遇的故事。

1910年《Howards End》（霍華德莊園），描寫的是來自不同社會層次的三個家庭之間的關系與糾葛的故事。

作者寫完以后將手稿給了很多朋友閱讀（是不是有一種小H文“地下流通”的感覺）。現實情況不允許《Maurice》出版，而且福斯特一直不愿意讓這部小說出版面世，后來可能是年紀大了，他妥協說這部小說在自己死后出版，而且他經常懷疑自己的決定，一直在反問“值得嗎？”

我們或許無法想象，100年前的“腐國”竟然如此不腐。

我喜歡上這本《Maurice》，是從原著改編的電影開始的。

幻想一下下：在全球知名高校劍橋大學的美麗典雅、古色古香的校園里，兩個情竇初開的絕色美少年談著一場刻骨銘心的古雅典式戀愛，在迷人的月光下細雨蒙蒙，潮濕的小路兩側發散著昏黃的燈光，斑駁的古城堡用鋼琴彈奏著悲愴交響曲……

是不是很過癮？趕緊快去看這部電影吧，你的這些幻想都會一一實現、并破滅。

詹姆斯·伊沃里導演在1987年將《Maurice》搬上了大屏幕，并捧回了威尼斯影展銀獅獎，而且老先生也是2017年風靡全球的電影《Call me by your name》的編劇。電影里面三個男主中我最喜歡的是Clive和Alec（其實吧，主要是看臉，年輕時候的休叔真的真的真的是絕世美顏，一瞥一笑盡是溫柔，忠犬呆萌的探長也讓人愛到不行）。

在現有小說的基礎上改編電影的一個難題就是如何取舍，即使是好的改編難以避免評論的兩極分化。讀完原著后我倒吸一口涼氣，心想“還好我先看的電影，知道太多是一種罪惡，善哉善哉”。

如果你也對Maurice感興趣，答應我，一定要先看電影再讀書，好嗎？

對比著看，你會發現很多有趣的細節，電影讓書中的言行舉止起來、那些“不得不”讓觀眾愛恨交加，而書中呈現的是赤裸裸的“真實感”、大量的心理描寫是對電影畫面的補充，讓人物和情節更加飽滿。這部電影之所以成為經典，除了它Homo影史上開創性的意義之外，還有就是對經典情節的保留，譬如“摸頭”“表白”“越窗初吻”“逃課”“藍房子”“婚禮”“綠林”等等。

“關于愛情”

沒錯，這個故事講得就是三個男人之間的愛情，是三角戀，稍微帶點狗血。

愛情故事大概是這么發展的：Maurice在大學校園遇到學長Clive，Clive愛上了Maurice，Clive表白，Maurice迷茫后接受，兩人成為Couple（精神伴侶的那種），后來Clive中斷了和Maurice的親密關系，選擇結婚生子繼承家業，繼續和M保持著好友關系，并時常邀請M到自己家的大House狩獵打球，Maurice痛苦不堪，一個失眠的夜晚在Clive家和C的仆人Alec睡了，Alec愛上Maurice，Maurice對Alec產生好感，M和A幸福的在一起了。

愛情的第一個沖突：階級身份。Clive是沒落的貴族、Maurice是中產工薪家庭、Alec是移民來的社會底層，階層一直是社會中無法避免的問題，即使是在門當戶對也是很多人的擇偶標準，20年代的英國，階級觀念尤甚。福斯特在小說中讓Maurice和Alec在一起，是對社會現實強烈的抨擊，是Love can defy the world的一段宣言。

愛情的第二個沖突：同性之愛。很長一段時間，同性戀被認為是反常、病態、罪惡與犯罪，受到社會和教會組織的監視、譴責和法律的制裁，一旦沒揭發，他們的名譽、家庭、事業甚至一切都會被剝奪。弗洛伊德1935年提出同性戀并非疾病的觀點，但是到1973年才被大多數精神病醫生承認和接受。

我們鄙視Clive的懦弱，贊揚Alec的勇敢，殊不知“當你擁有的越多，你害怕失去的越多”。

小說中，作者對英國社會進行了抨擊，治療師建議Maurice去法國或者意大利，因為在那里homosexuality是不違法的，當提及問什么英國是否也有可能時，醫生回答“I doubt it. England has always been disinclined to accept human nature”。

有人評論說Maurice不是Forster想成為的人，是Forster想得到的人，我并不贊同，我認為Maurice是作者根據自己塑造的人物，小說中Clive是以Forster的大學同學為原型，Maurice最終放棄了“門當戶對”的要求，和“勞動人民”Alec，在現實中，Forster的戀人有印度學生、電車司機、警察等。

“關于性愛”

小說的開篇就是一個“教科書”式的性教育。

14歲的Maurice即將離開私塾進入校園，杜希教授在畢業課上，帶小Maurice一個人來到沙灘上，用手杖在沙地上花了一副男女SZ器官的示例圖，然后科普了男性、女性、愛情、婚姻等等一些知識。

電影中的sexual鏡頭也能讓你大飽眼福，比如越窗的親吻，草地上的襲胸，拳擊俱樂部沐浴、倫敦賓館離別等等。

“性”“愛”本是一體，然鵝，Maurice和Clive之間的是柏拉圖式的愛戀，Clive沉迷于古希臘文化，尤其是柏拉圖，會飲篇中有篇幅專門夸贊了男男行為，在古希臘人的心目中，男男是一種高尚的行為，沒有任何限制。Maurice肉體的空虛通過Alec來滿足的，后來發現Alec是愛他的，繼而全然接受了兩人的關系，達到靈魂和肉體的統一。

其實，我認為Clive是“禁欲系”，你無法想象他和Anne結婚后并無床事，因為他倆都不知道怎么發生，Cli ve認為床事是自然而然且只在夜間發生的事情。所以說，劃重點：讓你或者你的孩子早點接受性教育是一家特別重要的事情。

福斯特在作品中對sexual問題的描寫是非常隱晦的，他的一位友人用一個比喻來評論“E. M. Forster never gets any farther than warming the teapot. He’s a rare fine hand at that. Feel this teapot. Is it beautifully warm? Yes, but there ain’t going to be no tea”。如果你去讀他的小說，你經常會有這種感覺“我褲子都脫了，你就給我看這個？”。

坦白來說，Maurice這整本小說中，我認為最露骨的描寫是這一句“He longed to embrace them and mingle his being with theirs”。（小朋友，你是不是有很多問號）

“關于覺醒”

覺醒是通過Maurice來呈現的，包括自我意識和身份認同。

莫里斯很乖，是個羞澀溫柔的男子，從小就很照顧身邊家人朋友的感受，但他是一個特殊的人。他對自身的同性欲望從最初的困惑，到恐懼和掙扎，再到認同，全然接受，最終奮起反抗。這也是一些同性戀者后天覺醒的基本過程。

莫里斯的覺醒最開始是從得知家里的小園丁George被辭工后的出現的，他非常生氣，精神幾乎崩潰，并且做了有George裸體的春夢；再到第一次見到Risley，對他有莫名的好感；再到他和Clive的感情迅速升溫，兩個人黏在一起，親密無間，假期也要通過一封封的信來傾訴思念。我最喜歡的畫面之一，就是Maurice坐著凳子上，Clive坐著旁邊的地上，靠著Maurice的腿，M用手輕輕撫摸著C的頭發，那個畫面，美到感覺整個世界都為之靜止。

覺醒的爆發當然就是Clive的表白“I love you”，Maurice回答“Oh，rot!”,然后卻用英國的傳統道德來搪塞，一拍兩散，兩人的關系達到冰點。Maurice經過幾周激烈的自我反思，開始正視自己的欲望“You love and be loved”。

Maurice接受了洗禮，走進了Clive柏拉圖式的抽象愛情中，為了兩人的關系，M開始反抗老師，繼而輟學，開始反抗自己的母親。為了和Clive在一起，Maurice愿意為全世界為敵。

“關于轉變”

Clive和Maurice都在轉變，關于虛假與真實，沉睡與清醒。

Clive的那句“I should have gone through life half awake if you’d had the decency to leave me alone”仿佛是給Maurice下了一個魔咒，從此他再也不愿意撒手。在書中，這句話是Maurice第一次去Clive家，在藍房子中C對M說的。不得不承認，他們兩人三年多的熱戀是美好和幸福的。

電影中Clive的轉變是始于大學好友同性戀Risley被審判入獄，加上生了一場重病，Clive開始重新看待兩人之間的關系，開始對Maurice進行精神和肉體的排斥。

Clive去希臘旅行之前，

“我可以到你床上嗎”

“我很冷很痛苦，我睡不著，我不知道為什么”

“并沒有感覺更好，我走了”

從這段“床戲”開始兩人的愛情逐步瓦解。

Clive后來選擇了結婚生子，繼承管理家族的Penge莊園，開始走向仕途。看完電影，觀眾可以認為Clive是因為世俗的壓力選擇半睡半醒，隱藏自我迎合社會，他的內心還是愛著Maurice的。

最后的告別更讓人痛哭不已“You do care a little for me, I know, but nothing to speak of,and you don’t love me. I was yours once till death if you’d cared to keep me, but I’m someone else’s now”……莫里斯逐漸離去，藏于黑夜中。這一段告別有拍攝但是電影正片刪減。

書中關于Clive轉變的描寫的更讓人心痛，Clive生了一場病，莫名其妙就開始接受女人了“Against my will I have become normal. I cannot help it.”去希臘朝圣之后莫名其妙就不愛Maurice了“He had stopped loving Maurice and should have to say plainly”，甚至！Clive竟然喜歡Maurice的妹妹Ada并幻想過和她結婚。更不可理喻的是，Clive開始排斥和厭惡Maurice不想再提及過去。甚至！最后的告別Clive因為使命感要挽救Maurice。看到這些我只想說“Holy shit!!!”

Maurice的轉變更復雜，前面提到的覺醒是一個轉變。被Clive拋棄之后，Maurice心灰意冷，惶惶不可終日，他發現同性對他的吸引力越來越強烈，從最初的心理蔓延到生理，他極度痛苦，他無法控制自己的本能，他渴望能像Clive一樣，“變成一個正常的男人”。他想過自殺，去看醫生，求助治愈師希望能“痊愈”，可是，他不能。

在他肉體和心靈極度脆弱的時候，Alec的出現讓他的生活有了一絲溫暖，他開始關注這個獵場看守人，一個月黑風高的夜晚，Alec順著梯子爬上了Maurice的床，“Sir, was you calling out for me?...Sir, I know… I Know,”and touched him。Maurice的肉體得到滿足，他感到前所未有的快樂，他認知到兩個男人可以這樣快樂得在一起。打板球的場景映射著與社會的對抗，在綠茵場上，他心情大好，思想開始清醒，他感到他和Alec在一起對抗整個世界，對面站著那么多人，為了維持兩人脆弱的關系，他們必須拼盡全力。

我時常在想，在愛情面前，有平等可言嗎？我愛你比你愛我多一點，還是你愛我比我愛你多一點？

在相對簡單的校園里，求學成長是主要目的，期間Maurice和Clive的愛是平等的，他們都深愛著對方，他們天天形影不離，一起在追求著知識，塑造著自我。畢業以后，二人見面的機會少了、生存環境的不同導致矛盾的激化，導致二人自己愛情的失衡。出身工作等一系列問題讓二人的共同語言越來越少，甚至引發Clive對Maurice家庭的反感。Maurice以為一切都不會改變，但一切都在變。

Alec是底層人民的代表，他出現的篇幅很少，但這個人物仍然是飽滿的，他年輕、精壯、健康、勇敢、單純、不懶惰、有愛心、有自知之明、有上進心、對社會不滿、努力工作生存。Alec在見到Maurice的那刻起，就已經喜歡上了他，但因為自己仆人的身份不太敢接近，他只能在雨中偷偷得看著窗邊的M，開心大笑。他在Maurice傷心Clive忘記他生日的時候，對M說“生日快樂，先生”（那個時候M收到的電報應該是心理治療師的地址），不愿意拿Maurice給的小費，特別積極得提M的行李；追著M的馬車狂奔到城里；在M對著空氣呼喚的時候，他爬上了Maurice的床。

Maurice不告而別之后，Alec陷入瘋狂，他給M寫信約船屋見面。Maurice開始猶豫和退縮，他開始后悔和Alec的結合，開始害怕那短暫的快樂是不是一個陷阱，害怕自己被勒索。果不其然，Alec即將離開倫敦，希望能再享有他一次，寫了很多封信等了很久沒收到任何回復，于是Alec給Maurice寫了一封信“I wrote you I am going, it is not fair you never write to me…I come of a respectable family, I don’t think it fair to treat me like a dog”“I know about you and Mr Durham”。（被騙被勒索被傷害也是同性戀者害怕的一個問題，大家一定要學會保護好自己）。

為了能見Maurice一眼，憤怒的Alec使出了這招下三濫的手段。從博物館出來以后，Alec握住Maurice的手，“Sleep the night with me.”。兩人的再次見面讓Maurice在Alec身上看到了自己的影子，那么愛著一個人卻得不到任何回應的痛苦，“You love and be loved”，Maurice意識到眼前這個人是愛自己的，意識到Alec即將離去他更痛苦不已，于是他出口挽留。

The ordinary world is a million word novel written by Lu Yao, a Chinese writer. This novel is a panoramic expression of contemporary Chinese urban and rural social life of the novel, a total of three books. It was first published in December 1986.

With the background of China from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, through complicated contradictions and entanglements, and centering on the two brothers Sun Shao'an and Sun Shaoping, the book depicts the images of many ordinary people from all walks of life at that time; labor and love, frustration and pursuit, pain and joy, daily life and enormous social conflicts intersect with each other. Weaving together, it profoundly demonstrates the arduous and tortuous road that ordinary people have gone through in the historical process of the great age.

In March 1991, the"ordinary world" won the third Mao Dun prize in literature in China.
